Loyalty

The first time I was separated from my sister after she was born I was 4 years old and she was just an infant. I remember asking my mother when my baby sister was coming home. She told me that she didn't know… it had been 5 days.

I told my mother, "I miss her. 5 days is too long to be without a sister."

After an argument with my sister when I was around 8 years old, I yelled to my mother that she was always in my way, and in my things, and I was tired of her wanting to do everything that I wanted to do. I just wanted her to leave me alone and go away!

My mother simply said to me me, "Some day, you will love your sister, and you will miss her, and wish that she was around more."

When I was 11, my sister and I were in our room when she said to me, "I love you, I don't know why you are so mean to me." and I simply said "Because I don't love you."

She cried. I didn't take it back.

19 years and many obstacles of life later, my mother was right. I love my sister.... and I wish that she was around a lot more. She's always been there for me.

Even though there is the distance between us, we can share anything and everything with each other - and we do. Having someone who genuinely always wants what's best for you and wanting nothing more than what is best for that other person is such an amazing gift. It took a lot of growing up to realize how important we were to each other, but we finally got there and now that bond is unbreakable. I don't think there is a stronger kind of loyalty than that between sisters.

I can't imagine not having a sister; even 5 days is too long to go without one.

Having a sister is like having a best friend you can't get rid of. You know whatever you do, they'll still be there. ~ Amy Li
